📆Today in History.
In 1974: Emperor Haile Selassie's 58-year rule over Ethiopia ended.
🌍 And Elsewhere.
In 1977: South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko died in police custody.
If you are born today - then you share your BD with Yao Ming - a Chinese basketball player and Barry White - the late singer of ' I can't get enough of your love, babe' song.
⁉️ It's back to school season and as you know -it's third term... or 'Term Eyisa' ...'where children are promoted to the next class' ... meaning -'no school fees -no promotion'.
But do you know that School Pay is the easiest way to pay school fees ? Try it out.
📆 In the news.
There have been reports that Lake Bunyonyi -in Kabale- is changing color from blue to brown - and has an oily film on the surface - which is accompanied by a foul smell...
...Something that is unsettling residents
But first, Is Lake Bunyonyi a volcanic lake?
Yes, because it was formed by volcanic activity, through a process called lava damming.
Years ago, the Virunga mountain ranges erupted and lava flowing from them blocked a river. This created a natural dam, and the valley behind it flooded to form Lake Bunyonyi.
The numerous islands on Bunyonyi are tops of the hills that were submerged by the rising water.
So, whats the issue?
Ministry of Water says there is no evidence of seismic activity, tremors, or other signs of a volcanic event. And that the color change is a result of human activity and natural environmental processes, specifically:
1). Bad farming practices that have deforested the land -exposing it to heavy soil erosion and hence the brown color. And
2). The accumulation of decomposing plant and human waste causing brownification. This process reduces oxygen in the lake -killing the fish - which creates a foul smell and an oily layer.
Kati tukole ki?
Just know that - Lake Bunyonyi was formed by volcanic forces and its current environmental challenges are not an eruption.
The lake is suffering from pollution and environmental degradation - a problem that is now being faced by many lakes around the world.
Bye bye for now ...just make sure you have a victorious and partyful weekend.
