Good morning! Grab your coffee. Here is your two-minute snapshot of the world today.
Today in UG 🇺🇬 History:
The Lokiriama Peace Accord.
In 1973, a landmark moment for regional stability occurred in the border town of Lokiriama. Elders from the Matheniko community of Karamoja and the Turkana of Kenya met to end decades of violent cattle raids and resource conflicts.
To symbolize the end of hostilities, they famously buried their "instruments of war"—spears, bows, arrows, and guns—in a deep pit covered with concrete. This community-led pact remains one of the most successful examples of traditional peace-building in the Horn of Africa.
🌍 And elsewhere in Africa:
The M23 Movement, a rebel group primarily active in Eastern DRC, takes its name from the March 23, 2009, peace accord between the DRC government and a predecessor militia. While its activities are centered in Congo, the movement has historically had a significant impact on Uganda’s border security and refugee influxes, particularly at the Bunagana crossing.
