On this day in 1961: Buganda was granted internal self-governance by the United Kingdom. This was a key step towards Uganda's full independence the following year.

And on the same day in 1966, the Namibian War of Independence began with a skirmish at Omugulugwombashe. This date is now commemorated as Heroes' Day in Namibia.
